1) How did you first hear about GOTO?
Like most GOTO members, I heard about it from a friend. The former marketing chair, Christine Pecorella and I are friends and had been in the same a cappella group in Princeton.

2. What are your roles as a GOTO volunteer?
Marketing co-chair

3. How would you describe GOTO to a friend?
It's an all-volunteer run charity made up of really nice, young professionals in New York who donate their time to make a difference in kids lives. And we do make a difference. You should hear what the kids and their parents say after attending camp. They talk about being changed, having a new method of self-expression and self-confidence, getting experience that they would never have had the opportunity to gain in school.

4. What is your favorite GOTO moment so far?
Hard to pick just one. Partying with friends at the last gala, and the annual meeting a couple years ago in which one father said that his son's school had cut all the programs relating to creativity and that, without them, his son had stopped enjoying school as much. GOTO and Appel Farm had changed that by restoring his arts experience.

5. Where do you see GOTO 20 years from now?
I see GOTO having chapters all over the U.S., helping young people give back to their communities and kids retain a vital avenue for creativity and self-expression.

BONUS QUESTION: If GOTO sent you to Arts & Music Summer Camp, what would be your major?
My major would be vocal music. I was never any good at sports. Without music, I wouldn't have had the extracurricular activities that gave me so much joy and confidence, not to mention helped me get into college.

1) How did you first hear about GOTO?

I first heard about GOTO from my friend, Christine Pecorella a few years back and got involved this year after seeing a volunteer posting via Zogsports.

2) What are your roles as a GOTO volunteer?

I work on the development committee assisting with some new and exciting initiatives including grant proposals and donor outreach.

3) What is your favorite GOTO moment so far?

A true highlight, was the moment GOTO's first grant proposal was sent out. It felt like that start of the next phase for our development committee and I was so happy to be part of the team when it was sent. Now time for many more!

BONUS: If GOTO sent you to Arts & Music Summer Camp, what would be your major?

I would LOVE to major in Rockestra, but I'd likely major in Wind & Woodwind Ensemble; I play the alto sax.

1) How did you first hear about GOTO?

I first heard about it through Nisha Phatak, who is currently volunteering as well. I was trying to find something that I could give back to the community and feel as though I was a bigger part than just signing up for random volunteer opportunities and Nisha told me about GOTO. I figured it would be awesome to get involved!

2) What are your roles as a GOTO volunteer?

I’m helping out the marketing committee, mainly updating the blog posts and such.

3) How would you describe GOTO to a friend?

I would describe it as a group of young professionals that really want to help the youth explore opportunities they may never have had. GOTO does this by organizing events and giving tribute to the Appel Farm and the many talented kids that deserve a chance to be creative! It’s exciting to see the kids really develop their talents knowing you are behind the scenes!

4) What is your favorite GOTO moment so far?

Seeing as how I have only been a part of GOTO for about a month, it would have to be the Halloween Party as a whole. It was great to see so many people brave the horrible weather to celebrate the night and give back to an awesome cause. Everyone had great costumes on- but I think Beeker takes the cake! Best costume ever!

5) Where do you see GOTO 20 years from now?

I see it expanding to other cities, I mean, it was relatively easy to convince me to get involved and it’s for an amazing cause.

BONUS: If GOTO sent you to Arts & Music Summer Camp, what would be your major?

I have always had a passion for photography, I love being behind the camera and capturing moments before they pass by. It’s awesome when you can take a picture and have a moment forever!

11th Annual Halloween party: Hell Raised for Heavenly Cause!

The weather outside was frightful, but Giving Opportunities To Others' 11th Annual Halloween Ball was as delightful as ever! Angry Birds, Mavericks and Gooses, the Baywatch Crew, the Mario Kart gang and even a Mr. Softee braved the freak October snow storm that left many in the dark to pack the Broad Street Ballroom to Raise Some Hell for a Heavenly Cause!

The October 29th event SOLD OUT with nearly 600 tickets purchased. Party-groovers monster mashed from 10pm until the wee hours of the morning, all while enjoying a five hour open bar filled with spooky top shelf spirits!

A spook-tacular thanks goes out to the event's generous corporate sponsors-- Laguintas Brewing Company and Palm Bay International Fine Wine and Spirits, which donated IPAs and specialty Aperol and Prosecco cocktails for the event-- and with half of every ticket sold going to GOTO's mission of enriching the lives of underpriveleged NYC-area students through the arts, over $20,000 was raised!

Appel Farm Camp Visit 2011

Saturday, August 13th, was an incredibly fun day at Appel Farm Arts & Music camp! Ten GOTO volunteers attended the annual trip to camp to visit scholars enrolled in the second session. The scholars ranged from first timers to those attending their third and last Summer session. Once the volunteers settled in at camp, we were joined by the camp directors, camp founder Albert Appel and scholars in Appel Farm's art gallery. We went around the room to introduce ourselves and allowed the scholars to share with us their experience at camp so far. We learned about the classes they were taking, performances thus far and what they were planning for the upcoming performance week which happens during the last week at camp. There was a lot of excitement in the room as the students described what they have been able to create and learn over the Summer.

The volunteers were fortunate enough to see firsthand what our scholars are studying at Appel Farm. We were divided up among the students and able to attend their minor 1 and minor 2 classes. Some of the classes included street dance, sculpture (which included glass and welding), beginning guitar, costume and set design, vocal performance, super heros (students create and act out the super hero character they developed), theater, fashion accessories design and rock band.

It's always a joy to be in that creative and supportive environment with our scholars. Though GOTO volunteers only spend a couple of hours there, the annual trip always leaves an impact of purpose. What an amazing opportunity we as a group are able to provide. Now the school year begins with the chance for teachers to nominate 6th graders - some of whom will become the next class of GOTO scholars. Volunteers are already looking forward to next year's trip!

5 QUESTIONS FOR GOTO VOLUNTEER ALUM, MALINDA LOGAN

1) How did you first hear about GOTO?

I heard about GOTO from a fantastic ray of sunshine! Christine Pecorella and I were at a party one day where I was discussing how I had a passion for fundraising and wanted to volunteer my time. She mentioned GOTO and invited me to a bi-annual meeting. What intrigued me was the concept of having a young professionals volunteer organization. I had never known of that style non-profit. After attending the meeting, I was hooked. The presentations, ideas, discussions were so organized, exciting, and lively! The experience was gratifying and I knew this was a solid organization I wanted to be associated with.

2) What were your roles while you were a GOTO volunteer?

I served on the Development Committee. I wrote thank you letters, brainstormed ideas about recognition events, and other related duties. And, when there was a call to action, I was there volunteering my time. Whether it be stamping envelopes or attending meetings on how to make GOTO more visible, I helped in any way that I could. I'd recruit people to join, invite people to the mixers, galas, and parties. Having these duties gave me a sense of pride in the organization. I felt like I was helping build GOTO to a visible, stronger, more successful organization.

3) What have you been up to since joining GOTO's alumni?

Well, a lot I must say. It's been about 2 years or so. I went to school to get my masters in Fundraising Management from Columbia University. GOTO was instrumental in my academic projects. Thank you GOTO!!! After graduation, I decided to make a career change to a position in Development/Fundraising. So now, while making the switch I have joined another grassroots team, as the co-chair of the Events and PR committee for Stop Child Trafficking NOW (http://www.sctnow.org/). GOTO sparked a passion in me that I've been able to transfer to other grassroots charities. The mission, the volunteers, and the dedication were all factors that encouraged me to keep up my volunteer efforts and help recreate them in other causes. Thank you GOTO!!!

4) What was your favorite GOTO moment?

Well, it may be a little sappy. But, oh well! I was with my friend at the annual gala. I believe it was Casino Night. There was good music, good fun, good people all around. The band stopped playing and a young girl got on stage. She started speaking about GOTO and what it meant for her. Right then, I knew that it was all worth it. The proof was in the pudding, so to speak. She spoke so eloquently and passionately about her experience. I teared up because she touched my heart. She allowed me to realize that GOTO's mission isn't touch and go. It isn't a onetime offer. GOTO provides an experience that will last a lifetime. And all the while, I thought what we were doing was changing their lives for the better. When, in fact, they were changing mine.

5) Where do you see GOTO twenty years from now?

I see GOTO as a model organization for young philanthropists. GOTO will be used as a non-profit that other grassroots, volunteer run charities model themselves after. Others will want their organizations to have the same tight-knit networking groups, dedicated board, successful programs, and committed volunteers as GOTO. They will emulate GOTO's start up efforts because GOTO has proven success! GOTO will have expanded to several more cities, received numerous grants and awards, and have a waiting list of volunteers!

BONUS QUESTION: If GOTO sent you to Arts & Music Summer Camp, what would be your major?

That's pretty easy for me. Acting/Drama. I studied that in undergrad, so I'd say I still have a passion for the craft! :-)

1) How did you first hear about GOTO?

I heard about GOTO from one of the GOTO Godfathers, Jay Liddell, shortly after I moved to NYC in 2000. We were friends from college and I was looking for something to donate my time and money to in the city. When I first heard about the idea, I thought it was simple…and genius…simply genius! There are so many young professionals in New York who want to have fun, meet other people, and do something good for the world. GOTO does all 3 in a very easy and fresh way.

2) What were your roles while you were a GOTO volunteer?

I’ve served in a bunch of different roles over the span of almost 10 years! I started as GOTO NY’s first development director, which I did until 2004. I took a brief hiatus when I moved up to Boston in 2004, then rejoined GOTO in late 2005 as GOTO Boston’s development director. I later served as GOTO Boston’s president and GOTO Boston’s Volunteers director. Most recently, I was a board member.

3) What have you been up to since joining GOTO’s alumni?

I haven’t been away that long yet, but, I definitely plan to continue to support GOTO!

4) What was your favorite GOTO moment?

Definitely the summer trips to visit the camps. I’ve been to both Appel Farm in NJ and Medolark in Maine and both are fantastic. It’s really fun to see GOTO’s efforts directly put into action in helping young folks have a great summer…where they learn and make new friends. I especially loved how it seemed like GOTO’s scholars were the kings & queens of the camp!

5) Where do you see GOTO twenty years from now?

I see GOTO serving 5 different cities (maybe SF, Chicago and Dallas are next????) and 250 scholars each summer, all supported by a million dollar + annual budget and 100+ active volunteers.

BONUS QUESTION: If GOTO sent you to Arts & Music Summer Camp, what would be your major?

Drums. I tried in high school and was never very good. I want to give it another go!

1) How did you first hear about GOTO?

A friend invited me to attend a GOTO summer event – it was aboard the Peking at the South Street Seaport. Not only was it an amazing event and it allowed me to meet new friends, I was pleased to learn more about a wonderful charity – GOTO – from its volunteers at that time. Music and art have always played important roles during my childhood. I wanted to become GOTO volunteer after my first GOTO event!

2) What were your roles while you were a GOTO volunteer?

I volunteered for both the Events and Mentoring Committees and eventually chaired the Mentoring Committee. I assisted in scouting vendors, donors and venues for the events. I also recruited GOTO volunteers to be mentors and paired them with GOTO scholars and organized bonding and mentoring activities for the group. I enjoyed these experiences immensely and I felt a stronger connection to GOTO’s overall purpose and the scholars.

3) What have you been up to since joining GOTO’s alumni?

I’ve attended GOTO events when I can and have worked with companies and other contacts on providing sponsorships and donations for GOTO. And I spread the good GOTO word to young professionals living in New York and the Boston area, encouraging people to attend the events and to volunteer their time.

4) What was your favorite GOTO moment?

Hard to pick…but I would have to say the road trip to Appel Farms! There’s something magical about having the opportunity to visit the scholarship recipients at camp and seeing their talents first hand: AJ Giron’s dramatic soliloquy; Omar Garcia’s intricate metal sculpture; Elizabeth Cooney’s vocal solo; and Ray Bargallo’s designs. Bravo!

5) Where do you see GOTO twenty years from now?

I see GOTO growing to several additional cities including Chicago (my hometown!) and I envision an ever expanding network of GOTO volunteers and scholars continuing GOTO’s mission to provide scholarships to talented youth.

Photography! I love capturing that special moment and enjoy looking at the pictures afterwards.

GOTO Winter Galas and Halloween Spooktaculars come and go; and we have our personal reasons to attend or volunteer or devote time out of our extremely busy schedules. But when the time comes when we meet the scholars and their families, and most especially hear personal testimonials from the young scholars themselves – we all come to realize the value of our action and how decisions can influence, and dramatically change many lives.

Clementina Nyarko, a former 3 year scholar, recently wrote a personal letter to share her sincerest gratitude to GOTO NYC for selecting her as a scholar. It’s because of scholars like Clementina that GOTO continues to do what we do best.

Dear GOTO Volunteers,

The other day I realized that for the past 3 years, around this time I would be filling out applications for summer camp. When I had that thought I also realized that if it wasn't for all of you, I would not have had such great opportunities and blessings. It really is amazing what you all do: you give kids like me who don't come from a rich background an opportunity of a life time. You send us to such amazing camps such as Appel Farm and give us a chance to be free from all expectations placed on us at home. While I was at Appel Farm I got the chance to be a kid, make new friends, and even try new things (such as Fashion Design and Photography). I really cannot express enough how grateful and thankful I am for what you have done and given me--especially considering the economic status our country was in awhile ago. This program gave me the chance to grow as a person and even help others to come out of their shell and try new things. This letter does not even come close to the gratitude I owe you. From the bottom of my family, friends and my own heart I really want to say thank you and if there's anything I can do so that another child can have an experience like mine, please let me know. I also hope and pray that all the time and money you spent shall be tripled so that you all can continue to do this for many kids.

I attended Appel Farm from 2004-2006, since then I finished highschool at Fiorello H. Laguardia H.S. last year, and I am now studying acting and working professionally. In the past year I have been on NBC's 30 Rock, I did a commercial for MTV and Britney Spears for her Radiance fragrance (below). I've also participated in various Off-Broadway productions in Manhattan's Theater District. THANK YOU GOTO for giving me the opportunity seven years ago. Going to Appel Farm has not only allowed me to meet life long friends, but it also helped me discover who I was as a performing artist!

GOTO Semi-Annual Summit

GOTO New York kicked off 2011 with our Semi-Annual Summit, which brought together a wide gamut of the GOTO family. Founders, current committee chairs, seasoned and new volunteers, a GOTO alum and a couple current campers and parents joined us in discussing recent successes and our goals for the future.

We learned about how Gigi Koch and CK Khandekar, our two new Events Chairs, and the Events team put together a great sold out Halloween event and kept it $5K under budget, allowing even more proceeds to be allocated to scholarships. Evan Raggi and Heather Calvano, two other first year Chairs, informed us that over $35K was earned during the 2010 Annual Appeal. A great job by these Committees, as well as James and Catherine Holahan and the Marketing Committee, to help us raise scholarship funds!

Michelle Hunter showed us that our current campers had a great time this past summer, and many volunteers got to see the fun in action during a visit to Appel Farms. We also found out that over the past year the Scholarship committee was able to improve the application process by creating online forms for teachers and parents, as well as create introduction letters in Spanish and Chinese so all parents are able to learn and understand our mission. Kevin Costello recapped a fun DJ Scratch Academy Mentoring event where we had private DJ lessons for GOTO mentees and mentors. We look forward to gaining a new class of campers in 2011 and keeping our alumni involved in the GOTO family.

The day undoubtedly reached its high point when the Mother of Kayla, one of our current campers, stood up and gave us her very heartfelt gratitude for giving Kayla the chance to attend camp and be part of the GOTO family. She told us about how the experience has allowed Kayla to gain confidence in herself and greatly improve her grades. Both our current campers in attendance, Kayla and Crystal, and Alanna, our alum in attendance, then also shared how GOTO has been so special to them. Seeing and hearing that all of our work has touched the lives of these kids and their families surely let everybody in the room know that all we’ve done has had great results, and energized us for a great 2011.

New in 2011 we can look forward to more volunteer interaction with regular GOTOgethers, a new Google workspace for volunteers to help them stay informed, and of course many great Events! We are looking forward to everybody to being involved.

GOTO's 10TH ANNUAL GALA GATHERS HUNDREDS TO GIVE BACK TO NYC KIDS

Games and good works drew hundreds to Giving Opportunities To Others' 10th Annual Winter Gala on February 26th. A crowd of more than 400 gathered at the Altman Building in Chelsea to celebrate 10 years of working with other young area professionals to help enrich the lives of inner-city New York middle-school kids through the arts.

The black-tie optional event features a live-band, dancing, a silent auction and a host of table games including craps and ping-pong. Party goers were treated to a performance by a former GOTO scholar, who sang jazz and blues songs with JC Hopkins Biggish Band to kick off the night.

The event raised $20,000 for scholarships to Appel Farm Art and Music Center in Elmer, NJ. Since GOTO's founding in 2001, the tax-exempt non-profit has raised more than $1 million for scholarships, sending 135 kids to camp for 3 consecutive summers.

At camp, the GOTO scholars learn music, theater, visual arts, film and dance from working professionals. The experience gives them exposure to new forms of self-expression, helps build confidence, and provides a needed supplement to disappearing arts programs in schools.

"It really grew me out of my shell," said Alanna McIntyre, who received a scholarship in 2003.

"I was so quiet and shy and I never wanted to talk and be in a crowd with people," said McIntyre, who is now a freshman at Lehman College with a 3.5 GPA. "But now I am so much more talkative and put myself out there."

GOTO looks forward to the next 10 years of making new friends and giving back to the NYC community.

First Day of Camp!!

GOTO wishes its scholars, old and new, a great first day of camp!

We have 16 Scholars attending the first session of camp. The remaining 11 returning scholars are attending the second session of camp later this summer. Students choose majors and minors to study while at camp, such as:

--Music (Voice, Piano, Viola, Cello, Oboe, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Acoustic and Electric Guitar and Bass, Percussion and Drums)

--Theater (Scene-Based Acting, Playwriting, and Introduction to Directing, Stage Combat)

Although Jazmin has never been to sleepaway camp, she thinks it will be a lot of fun and a great way to refine her talents.

Appel Farm Exec Director Honored

The Executive Director of Appel Farm Arts & Music Summer Camp (GOTO New York's partner camp) Mark Packer, received the Lillian Levy Standing Ovation Award, the South Jersey Cultural Alliance’s highest honor, for his leadership in supporting the region and the State’s arts and cultural organizations.

Mr. Packer joined the staff of Appel Farm in 1984. From 1985 through 1987 he served as the Summer Arts Camp Director and in 1988 became the Executive Director. A native of Montreal, Canada, he is a graduate cum laude of Kenyon College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, and attended courses towards his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. He plays a major role in regional and statewide arts organizations including the South Jersey Cultural Alliance, which he co-founded in 1992 and is currently a Trustee.

He is also the President of ArtPride New Jersey, the statewide advocacy organization for the non-profit arts industry, where he has been a Trustee since 1988. He co-founded the Arts & Business Partnership of Southern New Jersey and was honored in 2002 as the recipient of ABP's annual Art Partner of the Year. He has served as a consultant and panelist for numerous organizations, including the Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission, and the G.G.Green Redevelopment Project. Congrats from all of GOTO, Mark!

Who Gains the Most From a College Education?

There was an interesting post on this week's Freakonomics blog quantifying the value of a college education to underprivileged students.

A new study finds that the students who are least likely to go to college (based on family background, abilities, and friend group) are the ones with the most to gain from a degree. Jennie E. Brand and Yu Xie find that the unlikeliest male college graduates earned 30% more over their lifetimes than comparable men who earned only a high school degree.

Summer camp experiences are expensive! But GOTO's kids are TOTALLY worth it.

In honor of the one year anniversary of Giving Opportunities Since 2001, we've decided to host our first inaugural "blograiser."

Over the next three months, we're going to raise enough money to send two GOTO scholarship kids to camp ... $40 at a time.

If you're curious how the finances break down, one full scholarship to Appel Farm costs GOTO $4,000. And one Med-O-Lark scholarship costs us $1,800.

That brings our 3 month fundraising goal to a grand total of $5,800 and 145 individual $40 donors.

GOTO Hits the Beach

Back in the early aughts, GOTO burst onto the international press circuit with two articles in Bermuda's daily broadsheet, The Royal Gazette.

Founded in 1828, The Royal Gazette is Bermuda's only daily newspaper and reaches around 90% of Bermuda's adult population. So it's safe to say Bermuda knew who we were.

The first article (published January 25th, 2002) focused on GOTO's humble beginnings and ties to the island. The second article (published June 3rd, 2003) featured an interview with the five founding GOTO Board Members ... live from Bermuda!

Second to emphasizing that the GOTO Board "Retreat" wasn't paid for by our donors, this was my favorite moment from either article: “We're not doing it for money, we're doing it because we believe in the organization and we believe in the kids. That inspires people to help us.”

That's as true today as it was then.

Another year, another action-packed GOTO Gala at Capitale.

The GOTO faithful showed up in force on Friday night. Weather be damned.

The silent auction spread was almost as impressive as the food. Three of our past scholarship receipients wowed the crowd by belting out jazz standards from the stage. Grotesk & Inglorious Basterds for Haiti

Back in June of last year, gosince01 interviewed the Swiss graphic artist Grotesk. He spoke about his creative influences & shared advice for GOTO's young aspiring artists.

This week, Grotesk & a team of artists linked up with Quentin Tarantino to help raise money for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Each artist was asked to create their own poster art based off their interpretation of Tarantino's film "Inglorious Basterds."

Only six of each print were created, and each was numbered and signed by Tarantino. On February 18th, patrons previewed and purchased the “Lost Art of Inglorious Basterds” at The Upper Playground Art Gallery in Downtown L.A. All proceeds from this program were donated to The American Red Cross to help the victims of the Haiti Earthquake.

As our 2009 Annual Meeting came to a close, Jenzia Burgos’s father (Victor) rose to his feet and delivered a passionate plea. Jenzia (‘09) was only three months removed from her first GOTO-funded summer camp experience, and Victor’s appreciation for GOTO’s impact was clear…

“Schools have been cutting art, music, shop- anything that has to do with creativity. When I went to school you had that, and now that is all disappearing. This program is a way of keeping that alive… Don’t stop! It is something that our kids desperately need and it is vital to their enhancement of themselves becoming creative human beings.”

In 2010, we’re adopting Victor’s plea as our theme for GOTO supporters: Don’t stop.

Your support during what has been a difficult economic year has been incredible, but you can’t stop now. Retiring immediately from regular Board duty is outgoing Chairman, Jason Liddell. Stephen Moeller (Treasurer and Director of Finance) & Geoff Adamson will be transitioning off of the Board in early 2010.

With these changes, GOTO's founding Directors (pictured in super-serious volunteering mode back in '03 above) have completely given way to an exciting new team of leaders (led by new Chairman & Executive Director, Rainah Berlowitz).

GOTO owes a lot to the contributions of Steve, Dana Deluce, Cam Snaith, Danny Salmon, Jason & Geoff (not pictured). But the future looks really bright in the hands of Rainah, Jon, Mel, Dave, Christine, Kelsy & Matt.

He recently answered the following question from one of his readers:

I'm a 24-year-old female looking for a Halloween costume that (a) isn't skanky (does that exist anymore??) and (b) will piss off as many people in NYC as possible. I'm from MA and it goes without saying a huge NE sports fan and somehow got sucked into living and working in Times Square for the past two years so I'd love a costume that would further alienate myself from the people in this city. Suggestions??

Halloween 2009: The DIY Costume Year

According to the 2009 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey (seriously - this survey really exists), 16.8% of Americans will be making their own costumes this year instead of purchasing them. And 15.8% will be reusing last year's costumes.

At GOTO's Halloween Costume Ball, we strongly encourage do-it-yourself costumes. So you frugal '09 Halloweeners will fit right in with us.

And if you're still looking for costume ideas for this year's party, you won't find them in the aforementioned survey. Below are their projected top ten adult costumes for Halloween this year.

GOTO NY's Halloween Costume Party is a few weeks away and tickets are going quickly. That pace isn't likely to let up anytime soon now that we've got two of New York's hottest DJ's - DJ Karomel & Edgar Guerrero - lined up for the night.

DJ Karomel is a 16 year veteran of the New York underground dance scene. Having worked as an audio engineer and studio manager for major musical artists such as Eric Morillo, Karomel also found his musical inspiration from entertainers like Louie Vega, Danny Tenaglia, Armand Van Heldon, Audio Bully’s and Daft Punk.

Karomel has traveled around the world experiencing the house music movement on a global scale. His ability to adjust to his audience and seamlessly mix various genres of music makes DJ Karomel a unique and desirable presence in the New York entertainment industry.

Edgar Guerrero emerged out of the Miami dance music scene in 1996 and since has DJed, promoted and managed a number of Miami’s hottest nightclubs. In 2006, Edgar moved to New York to enlighten a new audience using his musical talents.

Guerrero is a much-needed breath of fresh air in New York nightlife, and his shows are a musical experience sure to entertain audiences from around the globe.

A Halloween Fundraiser Retrospective

Historically, Halloween has always been GOTO's largest & most debaucherous fundraiser. Our very 1st Halloween party was held in a lounge in TriBeCa called Obeca Li. Obeca Li was over 15,000 square feet large and our decision to host the party there was a HUGE leap of faith. It was the largest GOTO venue to date by far.

The gamble paid off.

We sold 400+ tickets. Our guests' costumes were awesome. And the party was a blast. We haven't looked back since.

We're 5 weeks away from our 9th Halloween Costume Party and there's no reason to believe that this one won't be as much fun as the first.

On August 15th, a busload of GOTO New York volunteers made the trek down to Elmer, New Jersey to visit the many scholars who attended Appel Farm's 2nd camp session.

The vols spent the day touring the camp, hangin with the kids and eating good, old fashioned camp grub.

GOTO Boston Goes to Camp

A few weeks ago, four carloads of GOTO Boston volunteers caravanned past the blueberry patches of Washington, Maine and down a long dirt road, to visit their scholars at Camp Med-O-Lark.

They toured the campground, which was dotted with red cabins donning names like "Hotel California," and along the way spotted their campers dancing, fencing and acting with friends new and old. Whether they were exploring their creativity in the Art Barn, mastering their cooking skills, or just lunching with friends at the picnic tables, the GOTO scholars were thriving in their activities and having a ball!

The GOTO Boston crew wants to send a big thank you to all of their donors and volunteers for making the summer of '09 possible. They sent 20 deserving GOTO Boston scholars - the largest group ever - to learn, grow and accomplish their artistic goals in picturesque Maine.

Rock the Boat Basin: Events Committee Wrap-Up

Part of the joy in leading the Events Committee is getting to work with my committee volunteer to make each fundraising party a success. I often tell my members and other GOTO volunteers that “We put the fun in fundraising!” (cheesy and slightly embarrassing, I know, but it’s true!).

We ensure that each event goer's donated dollar is returned in the form of fun. We pick the little details that make each event one to remember: rockin’ bands, amazing silent auction items, delicious food and plenty of free-flowing "refreshments."

Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers - and the tireless outreach led by our Marketing Committee - GOTO events always have a great mix of New Yorkers. Rock the Boat Basin was no different. Each of you looked awesome when you stepped onto the scene. And you were surprisingly prompt!

While Rock the Boat Basin was GOTO NYC’s first foray into the Upper West Side, we pulled it off. And I had the best time while I was there!

Over the course of the night, I made it my mission to meet & speak to as many party goers as possible. For those of you who I spoke to, I want to thank each of you for not freaking out when I walked up with my little orange notebook and asked you to answer my questions:

“Why do you GOTO?”, “What do these events mean to you?”, “Is this your first or your fifteenth?”, “Who suckered you into coming tonight?”, “Are you interested in volunteering?” and the dreaded, “Can I take your photo for the blog?“

Some of the answers I received (and friends I made) can be found in the blog posts directly below. I hope they make you appreciate our GOTO people as much as I do.

I look forward to seeing each of you at Halloween 2009 - our NINTH (can you believe it!?!) Annual Costume Bash is at the Broad Street Ballroom. We’ll be rockin’ out from 9 pm to 2 am this year!

Report from Appel Farm: Rachael Bralow (Bunk 1 Counselor and Acting Instructor)

"Bunk 1 was quite the exciting place this summer, and Vanessa Wilson and Clyde Ilagan (both GOTO scholars) greatly contribute to the team morale. They both worked hard in their majors and minors and both girls kept the rest of the bunk on their toes, always ready to play a new game or lead the bunk in a new adventure.

Vanessa (photo on left) is a beautiful dancer. On July 11th, she got the chance to perform with both her dance majors and her music video dance minor in the mini-session showcase. She especially liked

the Michael Jackson tribute dance that her major did.

She also worked really hard in her swim minor and made great improvements in the pool. Besides swimming every day during Minor 1, she could be found swimming away at the pool during free time. During performance week, she performed in a toy box theme dance show she shined once more!

Clyde (photo directly below) also worked really hard in the ceramics studio during majors. She finished glazing and firing in the knick of time for her arts exhibition.

Clyde said that she made all of her pieces for her grandmother, which includes plates, a cup, a portrait of herself and some ceramic cookies! Clyde also got to exercise her inner rocker chick through her rock band where she played the drums.

Having both girls in my bunk was great, and I have missed having them this session!

Below is their Bunk's photo from First session. Clyde majored in ceramics and minored in dance for musical theater and the drums and Vanessa majored in dance and then minored in another dance class focussing on working with the video kids to create music videos and also minored in swimming.

Report from Appel Farm: International Week

Our friends from Appel Farm have been kind enough to send us updates from camp over the course of the summer. Here's their most recent report:

Today marked the beginning of International Week for all of us here at camp! To celebrate this, we held the first EVER Appel Farm Olympics! Each bunk was assigned a country to represent in various different games, which all originated in countries other than America. The games included things like "Ampe" from Ghana, "Stuck in the Mud" from Australia, "Birds Fly" from Tanzania, "Riding the Bicycle" from China, "Tock, Tock, Tockeeya" from Israel, "Tickum-Tackum" from Iran, etc...

This event gave everyone an opportunity to learn a little more about many different parts of the world in which we live, and everyone had a really fantastic time!

Crystal - a 1st time GOTO NY Scholar - just returned home from Appel Farm on Sunday and she couldn't wait to share her experiences with (and to thank) the GOTO faithful. Here's what she had to say ...

Thanks for the scholarship I'm really grateful for that! I had a blast making new friends and performing for everybody! I felt accepted by the first to the second night. Everyone is awesome over there! As you should know i went on the first session June 26- July 24.

My major was voice, my minors were piano and swimming and I had a great time doing it all. In my major I learned a lot of songs and I had fun, my performance in swimming has improved and in piano I learned a lot, a lot!

It was very hard to say goodbye. Everybody was crying I felt very sad but I just couldn't cry, but it's okay at least I get to keep in touch with my friends! I'll name some of my friends: Aron, Sarah, Ella, Audrey, Alyssa, Clare, Glendon, Christian, Josh, Josh P., Josh C., Marco, Jonathan, Brett, Aloria, Sammy, Cyan, Emma, Ahmira, Theresa, Alex, Dana, Jasmine, Maysa, Marialle, Sean, Tommy, Kyle, Katy, Shannon, Peter, Anna, Natalia, etc.

Again thanks for providing me with this great experience, I'll forever be grateful!!!

The 79th Street Boat Basin - site of Thursday's Rock the Boat Basin fundraiser - will bring together GOTO supporters from all walks of life. Bankers, teachers, lawyers, marketers and ... collies?

GOTO will have a chance to make history on Thursday - to break our eight-year-long streak of dogless fundraisers. According to the dog travel directory BringFido.com, the 79th Street Boat Basin is a rarity - a legit "dog friendly" restaurant in New York City.

If you haven't bought your tickets yet, grab them now before they're all gone.

Who Would've Guessed ... Active People Volunteer More

We're always on the lookout for good volunteers over here at GOTO. Maybe we should be spend more time recruiting in jazz clubs? Check out this research from National Endowment for the Arts:

Regardless of a person’s education level, gender, or age, performing arts attendance increases the probability of volunteering by 25 percentage points. Moreover, levels of activity, including arts and sports attendance, are better predictors of volunteering than are demographic traits.

Introducing GOTO New York’s Class of ‘09

Appel Farm's 2nd session of camp began yesterday. And given that most of our New York scholarship recipients attend the August session (there are fewer school conflicts than with the earlier session), we thought that now would be a good time to introduce our new class of kids. Either that or we forgot to post it sooner. So without any further ado ...

Sinaya attends PS 72 in Brooklyn, NY. A budding modern dancer, Sinya looks forward to learning ballet, jazz, tap and folk styles at camp.

Jade is a student at PS/IS 73 in Brooklyn where she impresses her teachers with the sophistication of her painting, drawing and sculpting.

Christian attends Mott Hall II in Manhattan. He is passionate about photography and capturing moments on film.

Kayla is from PS 175 in the Bronx. She sings in the chorus and enjoys harmonizing in groups.

Malik is an artist inspired by both nature and comics. A student at PS/IS 73 in Brooklyn, Malik creates his own original comic books by drawing characters from his favorite strips and placing them in his own stories.

Blessing is a student at MS 144 in the Bronx. A recent African emigrant, Blessing has had to learn to communicate in a new language. She sees the visual arts as a universal language and looks forward to expanding her ability to express herself creatively.

Crystal attends TASS Middle School in Manhattan. Her teachers describe her voice as "amazing" and Crystal hopes to compliment her vocal talents by learning piano.

Alexander attends PS 175 in the Bronx. His mother describes him as a shy artist who will benefit from learning amongst like-minded students.

Kwaku is a student at Mott Hall II in Manhattan. He is passionate about music and hopes to study film at camp in order to create music videos.

Jenzia is Bronx resident and student at The Center School in Manhattan. A singer, Jenzia plans to expand her vocal talents at camp.
